ERC: Center for the Engineering of Living Tissues (Georgia Institute of Technology)
Activity: Georgia Technology Leadership Award
Date of Post: January 19, 2001
Description:
The GTEC Student Council group was recently nominated for the Georgia Technology
Leadership Award for Public Service. This award is presented to an individual
or group that has worked to educate the public about issues regarding technology.
The SLC was nominated for our volunteer efforts in taking bioengineering and
biotechnology demonstrations into local high schools and hosting local high
school groups for hands-on experiences. The SLC was one of two finalists for
the award; six of us were able to attend a black tie awards ceremony hosted
by the Governor and SciTrek, Atlanta's Science and Technology Museum. We
did not win, but our group was recognized and a video clip was shown of an
actual visit and demonstration in a classroom. It was great exposure for
our SLC and our ERC before many of the technology leaders of the state.

Governor Roy Barnes (fifth from right) attended the awards ceremony and
poised with the nominees prior to the ceremony. A smaller version of the
sculpture in the background was presented as an award to the winner.
